Finding my resolve…

The past month and a half has been a bit of a rollercoaster for me. With the kids out of school participating in summer activities and myself feverishly job hunting after a recent job loss, I’ve certainly had my share of challenges to work through. It’s times like these, when things aren’t happening as smoothly or as quickly as I’d like, that I find myself taking a step back to evaluate where I am and where I’m going.

I was listening to a motivational video the other day in which the speaker was talking about resolve. They relayed one definition of the word resolve, which I felt was very relevant to me at this moment in my life. They said resolve means to promise yourself you’ll never give up. It’s seeing something important to you, through to the end, and being accountable to yourself whatever the outcome. Hearing those words reminded me of the promise I made to myself. A promise to continue writing until my story is complete. It was a message I needed to hear at a time I’ve been feeling a little low.

We all have our ups and downs, but it’s our resolve never to give up on our dreams and the promise to ourselves to see them through that makes all the difference. It’s why I write and why I’m more determined now than ever to finish books two and three of the Evarance trilogy for readers like you. I hope you’ll continue with me in my writing journey because I couldn’t do this without you. It’s your support that helps me strengthen my resolve to keep going!

Book and Audiobook Progress

Several people have asked me about the progress being made on book two and how soon an audiobook for book one will be available. To answer the first question, I am presently working on the rough draft for book two. This stage of writing is all about translating what’s in my head to words on paper (or the computer) that will be later refined and polished into a cohesive story. This can be a lengthy, yet necessary process that lays the foundation upon which the final story can be built. I will continue to update you as writing milestones are met and I draw ever closer to publication.

As far as the audiobook for Evarance – Rise of the Shadows goes, I am still determining how I want the recording to be done. I have several people auditioning to read the audiobook and am considering reading all or part of the audiobook myself. Once the way ahead is more clearly defined, I will let you know what progress is made. A lot goes into the production of an audiobook, so stay tuned for future updates.

Never give up on a dream…

It’s a new month! A time where I get to stand in awe of you and the support you are to me as I continue in my writing journey. And I’m not just saying that. I am truly touched you’re here with me today, taking the time to read what I have to say. There’s a quote I want to share with you from one of my heroes, Earl Nightingale. The quote is this . . . “Never give up on a dream just because of the time it will take to accomplish it. The time will pass anyway.”

My dream of becoming a novelist started simply as a desire in my heart to accomplish something that at the time, seemed nearly impossible to me. I wasn’t very good at writing in the beginning, and it took me eight years of actively working toward my dream before I was finally able to make it a reality. Dreams are so important to have, no matter how outrageous they may seem. What’s your dream? Are you taking steps to achieve it?

Evarance Newsletter – May 2016

Evarance_Title_bw

The end is only the beginning…

Let me begin by saying that I am truly touched by the outpouring of support I’ve received over this last month with the publication of my very first novel! It has been an honor to be the recipient of so many heartfelt well-wishes and encouraging words and I am grateful you are here with me to share in the adventure. I’ve learned so many things on my journey to publication, many of which I will be sharing with you at a later time. For now, I’d like to tell you my thoughts about how it feels to reach the end of a goal that I’ve spent so many years of my life trying to pursue. I know now, the end of one dream is really just the beginning of another.

I expected to be overcome with a sense of relief after finishing my novel. After all, I put so many years of blood, sweat and tears into it. Surely I was deserving of a much needed break. But I am beginning to realize that’s not the way it works. At least not when I still have so many more book in me to write. I am now standing on the edge of something so much bigger and greater than I could have ever imagined, but it will take a lot of time and hard work to fully realize the dreams before me.

I never truly understood just how much work went into the publication process. That is, until I went through it myself. I am also amazed at how much work goes into the marketing side of selling a novel. Marketing is vital to building readership and spreading the word. After all, if an author doesn’t market their book, how will readers ever find it among the extensive list of books published each year? I feel very much out of my comfort zone with all this, but I suppose that just means I’m going through my own personal period of growth.

Remember the story of Alice in Wonderland? It’s a story about a girl who follows a rabbit down a hole and the deeper in the hole she goes, the more strange and unusual the world around her becomes. That’s how I feel right now. In the beginning, I thought writing a book would be an incredible accomplishment to achieve and don’t get me wrong, it really is, but one published book is really only the start of what I hope becomes a long and fruitful career as a professional novelists. There’s so much more in me that needs to be written and so much more work to be done.

Thank you for being here for me. Your support gives me so much strength. Now on to some exciting news!

In March, I signed a publishing contract with Stealth Books, who have been absolutely amazing to work with. They are a small publishing imprint, but have a solid book lineup and a great mission. I am their first female author and first to add a Young Adult Fantasy book to their offerings. You can visit their site and learn more about them at http://www.stealthbooks.com.

My editor, Lisa Rojany, did a fantastic job content and line editing my book in preparation for printing. She gave me very good feedback which helped to make the book really shine and ensure readers like you could enjoy the story without getting distracted by grammatical and content mistakes. Even with all of her help, I spent many late nights and long weekends refining the book and formatting it for hardcover, paperback and electronic publication. Who knew so much went into preparing a book for publication! If you’re interested in learning more about Lisa and the services she provides, please visit her website at http://www.editorialservicesofla.com.

What’s more, Renata Lechner, the talented Photomanipulator / Illustrator from Poland did a fantastic job on the cover art for the book! Her work is incredible and for those of you who want to see more of what she can do, please visit her website at http://thelemadreamsart.deviantart.com. Renata was a crucial part of bringing my characters to life and she spent many hours working hard to make the book cover the best it could be. Look below to see the beautiful artwork she made.

Evarance Newsletter – March 2016

Momentum…

Things have been super busy in working toward getting “Evarance – Rise of the Shadows” into the hands of readers like you. Last month, Chapters 19 and 20 were finalized and internally edited, leaving just two more chapters to go before the book is complete and ready for content/line editing by a professional editor!

I have found an editor named, Lisa Rojany, who has written and edited bestsellers and award-winning titles, including lots of fantasy Young Adult books. She is ready and anxious to assist me in polishing my book to be the best it can be and is scheduled to begin work on March 7, 2016 to edit the book so it is ready for print. I have been told professional editing will take roughly 2 weeks to complete, which means by March 21st, the content of the book should be finalized! With the deadline to get my book to the editor closing in so fast, I have a very busy week ahead!

What’s more, there has been huge progress made in working on preliminary designs for a book cover. I’ve commissioned a talented Photomanipulator / Illustrator from Poland named Renata Lechner to do the artwork for both the front and back covers. She does beautiful fantasy art and I’m anxious to see what she comes up with. The main character, Rachel, and a firefox are two of the main elements that are planned for the front cover. I imagine the firefox will be tricky to do, but I know this talented artist is up to the challenge!

The majority of the cover artwork is scheduled to be done the week of March 21st. The reason for holding off on doing the cover until the manuscript is finalized is to get an accurate page count for the finished book. This is important because without knowing the final page count, there is no way to get a solid template for the cover art. The more pages in the book, the thicker the spine will be and the fewer pages, the thinner the spin will be. Any changes to the page count of the book will directly impact the artwork being made.

P.S. – Things are ahead of schedule! Final (internal) edits for Evarance – Rise of the Shadows are scheduled for completion by March 7th, 2016 (it was previously March 24th, 2016) at which time the manuscript will be reviewed and edited by a professional editor. Then, following the professional edits, cover art will be done for the book. Evarance Newsletter – February 2016

Evarance_Title_bw

Moving forward…

Each new month brings “Evarance – Rise of the Shadows” a little closer to publication and I am so excited to share with you some of the progress that has been made. Last month, Chapters 17 and 18 were finalized and polished, leaving just four more chapters to go before the book is complete!

These are both exciting and challenging times for me as a first time author. It’s exciting because the end is in sight, and my book is nearly ready for submission to agents and publishers. It’s challenging because as I’ve worked diligently to edit my original draft, I am finding more and more of the story needing to be rewritten or written from scratch.

Why the rewrites? That’s because a lot of the original storyline has shifted and changed overtime requiring me to adjust or scrap much of my original work to make the story flow. This whole process has been a great learning opportunity for me and I am anxious to see how much smoother writing book two goes as I apply the lessons I have learned in writing book one.

Now, on to some other exciting news! I am working on creating a promotional bracelet charm for my book to be used in early giveaways. The company I’m working with has a long history of creating beautiful, high quality charms. Below is the rough design being used for development of the promotional fire charm and an excerpt from the book describing it.

Fire_Charm_Drawing“One of the charms resembled a fire that appeared to be made from red, orange and yellow crystals. It shimmered in the sunlight and looked as if it were really burning.”

Now, the promotional fire charm won’t be made of crystals like the one in my book, but if all goes well it should still be pretty cool. And don’t worry, as a member of my mailing list you will automatically be entered into the first drawing for a chance to win one of these charms. I will be sending out more charm pictures in the near future so stay tuned.

Evarance Newsletter – January 2016

Evarance_Title_bw

Into the woods…

Writing a book for me has been a long and arduous journey. One which I will liken to entering into unfamiliar woods with a backpack full of mismatched gear and little to no experience with the tools I’ve been given. It has been a journey of discovery and skill building as I have worked to find my own voice, my own style of writing, and worked hard to overcome my own personal deficiencies that, until I started out on this incredible journey, I didn’t even know I had.

In the beginning, I had to go back to the basics of grammar, punctuation and dialogue. Much like building a camp fire and shelter for the first time, to learn the basic skills of survival in a foreign place. As I have walked this path to authorship, experiencing both successes and failures along the way, I have met other travelers much like myself, pursuing their own dreams and charting their own paths.

These travelers have helped me on my way. Sharing with me their experiences and knowledge, allowing me to learn and grow as a person and a writer. I am better now than I was before for having met each and every one of them. You, my dear friends, are some of those travelers. Teaching me how to properly use the tools within my pack and sharing some of your own tools with me to help me on my way.

These tools that you have shared with me aren’t all related directly to the technical side of writing. Many of them are related to the experiences, memories and moments we have shared, even if only briefly, that have enriched my life and understanding, giving me a deeper well from which to draw my ideas. I have been abundantly blessed by the insights, mentorship and support I have received along the way and look forward to getting my book out there for everyone to enjoy.

A book without readers is like a play without an audience. Please help to spread the word so my book can reach as many people as possible! Invite others to subscribe. My intent is to make this a monthly newsletter as I draw ever nearer to publication. Exciting things will be happening in 2016 and I look forward to sharing them with you!

Finding my voice

Tags

, , , ,

As I have been working on editing and rewriting my novel, it struck me that much of my journey thus far has been an attempt to find my voice, my writing style. When I first started writing it was pretty painful getting words down onto paper, not just because I wasn’t certain what to say, but also because I wasn’t sure how to express the things I was thinking and feeling. Transforming the images in my head and the scenes that play out in mind from thoughts into written expressions that other people would be able to read and understand has never really come naturally or easily to me. It’s been a lot of work and lot of effort.

The first step in my journey of writing a novel, was merely getting my thoughts down on paper in any form I could. Some words became detailed descriptions, other words formed into dialogues between characters with pretty terrible grammar, because I hadn’t learned yet how dialogue grammar worked. Parts of my book took the form of streaming thoughts, where I was having more of a discussion with myself than with anyone else as I tried to understand and define character and story elements to give my story substance.

With each word I wrote, my confidence and my competance slowly grew until I reached where I am today. Not yet a true novelist, but one that is well on her way. My rough draft is mess. As I work through the editing stages, refining my story as I go, there is so much that has to be redone and so many chapters that have to be rewritten. It is sad in a way. Recognizing that so much of what I wrote to get me to this point will be tossed by the wayside. But I realize now, that each of those words and that hours spent writing them was not a waste, but a necessary part of my progress and growth and an integral step toward finding my voice.

So many people have shown me an incredible amount support during this journey of becoming an author, and I want to personally thank each of you for giving me the strength to keep pressing forward toward my dreams.

This last year has also been a time of growth for me as an individual and as a writer. I have learned so much about myself, life and my purpose as I’ve worked through the challenges, opportunities and disappointments that came my way. I’m more convinced now, than I have ever been, that I want to be a novelist. There are stories in me that want to be told. Whether or not anyone will like those stories is yet to be seen, but I feel in my heart this is a work I need to do.

The new year brings with it a chance to start anew. It’s a time of renewal, a time of hope and a time of promise. It can be energizing to leave behind the weight of the past year and look forward to all the possibilities the future holds. Some people use this time to make new resolutions or goals for the upcoming year. I want to use this time to realign my actions with my goals, so I will be back on the path to reaching them. Not sidetracked or overwhelmed with unimportant things.

I want to share with you a poem I wrote when I was a teenager. It’s about seeing life’s possibilities.

Through The Window
By Bonnie Clark

Through the window I can see,
the person that I want to be.
She’s smart and strong and not afraid,
to chance the choices that she’s made.
She’s true to who she is inside,
so’ll never be dissatisfied.
She won’t look back and have regret,
for things she didn’t do or get.
I slide my finger down the glass,
and contemplate how time will pass.
Will I become that girl I see?
Or will the glass keep her from me.

Don’t let “the glass” keep you from becoming the person you are meant to be. Dream it, do it, live it! Let’s make 2015 a year to remember. One in which we can be proud of who we’ve become and the things that we’ve done!
