So, what is a dream board? A dream board is a visual representation of your dreams, goals, ambitions and desires. Basically it’s the things you’d like to have, do, or be in this life mixed with things that are inspiring or meaningful to you. In some ways, it’s similar to making a bucket list, which is a written list of the things you want to do in your lifetime. In other ways it’s a little different. That’s because a dream board can become so much more than just a checklist of things to be accomplished.
A dream board is also a very personal thing. It’s all about you. Who you are deep down inside, what drives you and what matters to you. No one else really can, or should decide what goes onto your board besides you. That’s because it’s as unique and special as you are. The dreams on your board can be financial, material, physical, spiritual, emotional, mental, and social to name a few. For example, health and wellness might be important to you and could certainly be something you incorporate into your board. Or maybe becoming better at public speaking or perhaps serving more in your community. Maybe a certain amount of money or a certain lifestyle are things that you desire. What about people you admire or want to be more like? Are there places you’d like to visit? Things you’d like to own someday? Relationships you’d like to have, improve or cultivate? Goals you’d like to reach? Things you’d like to learn more about? Skills you’d like to develop?
Dream boards can change as often as life does. That’s part of the beauty of life isn’t it? It’s ever changing, not static or stagnant. We each go through different seasons in our lives, and during those defining moments, the way we see the world and what’s important to us changes too. Dream boards are flexible. As your dreams are realized, just remove them from your board and replace them with new dreams, new desires, new things to inspire you. You may find that as the months and years roll on, some of the dreams may no longer align with your life, your purpose. And that’s ok. Remove the old and add some new that reflect who you’ve become and where you want to go.
Does it have to actually be a board? A dream board can be almost anything you can imagine so long as it helps you visually represent your dreams. It doesn’t have to be a board at all, although it can be. It can be a poster-board, or a wall collage, a mural, or a bulletin board. It can be a wallpaper on your desktop that incorporates your dreams or even a visual slide show like an electronic picture frame or screen saver. The important thing is that you see it regularly so it can be a constant reminder of the things that are really important to you, the true desires of your heart. This will help you stay focused on your dreams, drawing you back to them again and again when you get off track.
How exactly do you make a dream board? That depends on which method of display you choose. If it’s a poster-board or bulletin board, find images of things you want to put on your board. These images can come from magazines, newspapers, photo albums, the internet or any other source. In fact, my husband was at the doctor’s office once and he began speaking with a lady about goals and the dream board he and I made. As he did, she reached into her pocket and pulled out a Santa bill for one million dollars and gave it to him to add to our dream board. Printouts or cutouts of pictures work great to capture your dreams so you can stick them to your board. A wall collage can be pictures, paintings, objects and more. The sky really is the limit. Want to make a mural? You can use paint, markers, chalk or other art mediums to bring your dreams to life. Even vinyl letters that have become popular to put up on walls in recent years can be included. If you want to go the electronic route, find or scan in digital images to use.
Making a dream board may take time. It’s is an ongoing process so start small, adding just one dream at a time. Before you know it, you will have a beautiful representation of you and what you want out of this life, and that’s when the fun really begins. Displaying your dreams in a concrete way is very powerful. It will bring them closer to you and in no time at all many of them will begin to be realized. If you don’t have one already, start today and start small. What will you put on your dream board?
